Temperament & personality
The Abyssinian is a slender, athletic breed with a unique ticked coat where each hair has multiple colour bands. It is one of the oldest known breeds and is described by many as a 'wild cat in a tame body'. The Abyssinian is constantly in motion, loves to climb and explore, and is known for its intelligence and curiosity. It is not a lap cat, but an active participant in family life.
🏥 Health
Abyssinian can be predisposed to progressive retinal atrophy (PRA-rdAc), pyruvate kinase deficiency (PK-def) and kidney problems (amyloidosis). DNA testing is available. Dental health and ear mites should be monitored.
✂️ Care & grooming
The short coat requires minimal maintenance. The Abyssinian needs a great deal of stimulation and activity – cat trees, puzzle feeders and interactive play are essential. Not suited to being a solo cat and thrives best in active homes or in pairs.
Did you know?
The Abyssinian closely resembles the cats depicted in Egyptian pharaohs' tomb paintings, but DNA shows its closest relatives are found along the coast of the Indian Ocean.
