Temperament & personality

CalmSocialGentlePatientCurious

The Birman is a beautiful semi-longhaired breed with characteristic white 'gloves' on all four paws and bright blue eyes. Legend has it the breed originated in sacred temples in Burma where cats were considered guardians of the priests' souls. The Birman is a calm and social cat that thrives in the company of both people and other animals. It is smarter than it looks and can learn tricks and fetch.

🏥 Health

Birman can be predisposed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and kidney disease. DNA testing and echocardiography are recommended for breeding cats. The breed is generally healthy and lives long with good care.

✂️ Care & grooming

The semi-long coat mats little and is relatively easy to maintain – brushing a couple of times a week keeps it nice. The Birman is calm and thrives as an indoor cat, but appreciates enriched surroundings and interactive play.

Did you know?

The Birman's white 'gloves' are a key characteristic – all four paws should have identical white socks to meet the breed standard.
