Temperament & personality

The British Shorthair is an ancient and distinctive breed with rounded features, a dense short coat and a steady, balanced temperament. It is not a cat that demands constant attention, but is loyal and secure in the company of its family. The breed suits people with a calm lifestyle and likes routines. It is known for its iconic 'teddy bear' appearance and comes in over 30 colour variations, with blue (grey) being the most well-known.

🏥 Health

British Shorthair can be predisposed to HCM, blood type B and polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Blood typing is important for breeding. Many breeding cats are tested for PKD by DNA or ultrasound. Obesity is common in the breed – keep an eye on weight.

✂️ Care & grooming

The dense short coat only needs weekly brushing. The British Shorthair is generally undemanding, but needs daily play to avoid becoming overweight. It is not particularly fond of climbing, but appreciates resting spots at varying heights.
