Temperament & personality
The British Longhair is, as the name suggests, the semi-longhaired version of the British Shorthair. The breed arose naturally from crossing with Persian cats and has the same robust, rounded body and calm temperament as the shorthaired variety. It is a stable, secure family cat that is not demanding. The British Longhair copes well alone for shorter periods and suits people with varied lifestyles.
🏥 Health
Like the British Shorthair, the British Longhair can be predisposed to HCM, PKD and blood type B. Testing is recommended for breeding cats. Obesity is common in the breed and should be prevented with proper diet and activity.
✂️ Care & grooming
The semi-long coat requires brushing two to three times per week to avoid matting. During shedding season, daily brushing is recommended. The breed is moderately active and needs regular play, but is not demanding.
Did you know?
The British Longhair is not recognised as a separate breed by all cat organisations – some register it under British Shorthair with a longhair variant.
