Temperament & personality
The Devon Rex is a small, elf-like cat with large ears, broad cheekbones and a wavy, curly coat that feels soft as velvet. Discovered in Devon, England in the 1960s, it differs from the Cornish Rex with a broader head shape and a different coat mutation. The Devon Rex is extremely social and clingy – it likes to sit on your shoulder like a parrot. The breed is intelligent and can learn tricks.
🏥 Health
Devon Rex is predisposed to hypokalaemia (low potassium levels), HCM and a hereditary muscle disease called Devon Rex myopathy. Blood tests and DNA testing are recommended for breeding cats. Dental health and cardiac monitoring are important.
✂️ Care & grooming
The curly coat is delicate and should not be brushed hard – use a soft cloth or gloves instead. Ears accumulate wax and should be cleaned regularly. Devon Rex is not particularly suited to cold outdoors, but is active and needs daily play.
Did you know?
Devon Rex and Cornish Rex look similar, but have different genotypes – the curls are caused by different mutations.
