Temperament & personality
The Norwegian Forest Cat is a natural Nordic breed with roots going back to the time of the Vikings. It is a strong, robust cat with a double coat that provides excellent protection against the Nordic climate. The Norwegian Forest Cat is a versatile family cat that thrives both indoors and outdoors. It is affectionate and social, yet not demanding – it chooses when it wants attention. The breed is known for its love of climbing and need for stimulation, but is generally calm and harmonious in the home environment.
🏥 Health
The Norwegian Forest Cat is generally a healthy and robust breed, but can be predisposed to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and glycogen storage disease type IV (GSD IV). Responsible breeders test their breeding cats regularly. Weight gain can occur in indoor cats, so monitor diet carefully.
✂️ Care & grooming
The double coat requires brushing two to three times per week, especially during shedding in spring and autumn. The Norwegian Forest Cat appreciates climbing opportunities, ideally a tall cat tree. It thrives with outdoor access but can also be kept indoors with sufficient stimulation.
