Temperament & personality
The Persian is one of the world's oldest and most recognisable breeds, with its flat nose, round face and lush long coat. It is a calm and sweet-natured indoor cat that likes peace and quiet. The Persian is not particularly active or playful – it prefers to lie in a soft bed or on its owner's lap. The breed suits quiet homes and is very affectionate and contact-seeking.
🏥 Health
Persian cats are predisposed to polycystic kidney disease (PKD), which is hereditary and can be tested by DNA. The flat nose (brachycephaly) can cause breathing difficulties, dental problems and eye issues. Eyes often water and should be wiped daily. Choose breeders with PKD-free breeding cats.
✂️ Care & grooming
The coat is demanding – daily brushing and regular bathing are necessary to avoid matting and dirt. Cleaning the face and eyes should be done daily. The Persian is a pure indoor cat and should not have outdoor access without supervision.
