Temperament & personality
The Scottish Fold is known for its forward-folded ears that give the cat an owl-like appearance. The breed originated in Scotland in the 1960s from a spontaneous genetic mutation. It is calm and adaptable, thriving in most homes. The Scottish Fold can sit in a distinctive 'Buddha position' and is known for sleeping on its back. Note: breeding Fold × Fold is controversial and ethically problematic due to health consequences.
🏥 Health
The genetic mutation that creates folded ears can also cause osteochondrodysplasia – a painful skeletal disorder. This is especially serious in cats with two copies of the fold gene. Echocardiography is recommended as HCM is also known in the breed. Many countries prohibit Fold × Fold breeding.
✂️ Care & grooming
The ears require extra attention and cleaning. Regular veterinary check-ups to monitor skeletal development are important. The short coat is easy to maintain. The breed is calm and thrives as an indoor cat with moderate activity.
