Temperament & personality
The Sphynx is the best-known hairless cat breed and stands out dramatically from all other breeds with its naked, wrinkled skin. But beneath the unusual appearance lies one of the most people-friendly and warm cat breeds there is. The Sphynx is extroverted, playful and loves to be the centre of attention – often described as 'a dog in a cat suit'. It is warm-bodied and loves to lie close to its owners.
🏥 Health
The Sphynx is predisposed to HCM, which is a serious heart disease in the breed. Regular echocardiography is recommended. The skin is susceptible to sunburn and needs protection. The ears accumulate wax easily and should be cleaned weekly.
✂️ Care & grooming
Without fur, the skin must be bathed weekly to remove natural skin oil that would otherwise build up. The Sphynx needs warmth and should have access to blankets and warm resting spots. Ears are cleaned weekly. Tooth brushing is recommended.
Did you know?
The Sphynx is not completely hairless – it has a fine down on the skin that feels like peach skin or suede.
